Memories of the Dome

by Steve Friendt

It seems like only yesterday that the Minnesota Twin fans were eagerly anticipating the opening of the brand new Metrodome. I remember how sad I was when they decided to move out of the old Met stadium. Oh the Twins did a pretty good job of “selling” the Dome, but to many long time Twin fans, playing inside was sacrilege. Even from the very first year the cry arose “ Bring back outdoor baseball”. Sure, it was nice for those folks coming from out of town not to worry about getting rained out, but in exchange they had to watch baseball in a sterile, non-natural environment. I was at that first exhibition game against the Phillies and saw Pete Rose get the first hit, and Kent Hrbek hit the first home run. All in all it just didn’t seem right. So for the next 28 years we watched and cheered. We celebrated World Championships and division titles, all the time wishing and hoping that some day we would once again be able to watch the Twins outdoors. We don’t hate the Dome. Some of us actually got attached to it. Now it’s time to look back at the Metrodome. We went there, we cheered, we kept coming back. It wasn’t horrible, but now it’s just a memory.

  1. I predict that we will see the Twins play some more games in the dome someday due to bad weather. I will never miss the dome though, that is really cool how you went to the opening of the stadium though.
