Throw Back.....1970

By Steve Friendt

I was a little late getting in front of my TV this afternoon, but when I did I was sent back 40 years. The Twins were in their “throw back” uniforms and it brought me right back. There was Blyleven, Perry, Kaat, and Boswell…… Even though it was Mauer, Morneau, and Kuble, to me it was just like old times. Baseball is back to being where it should be. Just like 40 years ago people fill the park in anticipation of what’s ahead. Those Uniforms….. Could it really be that all these tears later we are right back where we started from. So much has changed since 1970 and yet so much is still the same…… Remember that year…. The Twins were managed by Bill Rigney and finished with a record of 98-64, first place in the western division of the American league. Killebrew hit 41 homers and Carew hit .366. Could this be an omen? I don’t know. It’s sure intriguing. To think that 40 years later the Twins have come full-circle. Instead of Killebrew and Oliva. The Twins have Mauer and Morneau. Instead of Perry and Kaat, the Twins have Pavano and Baker. In 1970 we never dreamed that would be the last title for 17 years. Now we’re not satisfied unless we win one every year. Let’s enjoy this year…for what it stands for…A new beginning….A move forward…some good baseball!!

  1. It seems like everyone I talked to thought it was a great idea to have the past greats at the game and the old uniforms. I didn't get to go to the game but the reviews of the stadium after the game were very positive.
